The High School Program

Preparing for a life-changing academic adventure abroad

The High School Program is the most traditional type of exchange programs, a precursor to all the formats we know today in the international education market.

Studying abroad during high school is an opportunity to develop maturity, independence, resilience, self-esteem, and tolerance while exploring a new country and culture, making international friends, and learning more about yourself and the world around you.

History

After World War II, the need to rebuild and establish international relations became a priority for many countries, and cultural exchange was seen as a way to achieve this goal. In 1947, the U.S. government established the Fulbright program, which allowed American students to travel abroad to study and also to host foreign students at American institutions. In this movement, international students got to know the public education system of the host country while being hosted by local families, who voluntarily offered to welcome these students into their homes, as members of the family. Since it depended on the availability of school places and finding families willing to host the students, this placement could occur in any location in the host country, from north to south, from east to west, without the participant's choice.

This type of exchange, even after more than 70 years since the first exchanges between students around the world, continues to this day in much of the world. Over the decades, the world has also changed and other formats or adaptations have emerged. Here at the Lounge, we divide High School programs into two main categories: the Classic Program and the On-Demand Program .
